‘SO, TELL ME SOMETHING else. A secret, something not a lot of people know.’ Jenny giggled and leaned in closer to Nick, her leg brushing his under the table.

‘What like?’ Laying his hands, palms up on the table in front of him, he looked at Jenny. ‘I don’t think I have any secrets. I’ve told you my most embarrassing moment already.’

‘Haha, yes, you have! I’ll bring that up next time you’re annoying me in the parlour. I’ll shout it across the shop floor and tell the world that you still like to wear earphones when you go for a morning jog even though you don’t play any music. They’ll know then that you can hear them and you’re just ignoring them.’

‘Not ignoring them. I just like to have some peace and quiet.’ Nick grinned and pointed at Jenny. ‘And, it’s only when I’m in a bad mood. Most of the time I don’t.’

‘Well, it sounds funnier if I just tell them it’s all the time!’ Jenny laughed. ‘Anyway, tell me something else.’

‘I don’t know what. Ask me something.’

‘OK. OK, I’ve got this.’ Pausing, she took a long gulp from her gin and tonic. ‘If you could change anything, anything at all, what would it be?’

‘Umm, literally anything? Could I make something not happen?’

‘Yep, literally anything.’

‘Right, well that’s quite a serious question. I’ll have to have a think.’ Staring forward, he pursed his lips and scrunched his eyes up. ‘I would have chosen the winning numbers on the lottery last week and built myself a self-sufficient home in the middle of a forest.’

‘Seriously? That’s it? That’s what you’d change if you could change anything?’

‘Yep, that’s what I would change.’

‘Fair enough, but it would probably take you longer than a week to build it.’ Jenny laughed.

‘Hold still.’

‘Oh no, what? Have I got a spider on me?’ Sitting as still as she could, she grimaced. She didn’t mind spiders, but she didn’t like the thought of one crawling over her.

‘No, you’ve just got a loose eyelash.’ Putting his pint down, he leaned forward and used the pad of his thumb to gently brush it off.

‘Thank you.’ She could see the reflection of the lights from the dancefloor dancing in his eyes.

‘You’re very welcome.’ Trailing his thumb from her cheek, he snaked it around her chin and up to her lips.

‘Thanks.’ Closing her eyes, she leaned in closer, the tingle of expectation deepening the closer they became. His lips were surprisingly soft for someone who spent so much time out at sea, his kiss strong but gentle.

‘Is this OK?’ Pulling back, millimetres from her lips, Nick looked her in the eye. ‘Is this what you want?’

‘Oh yes.’ Cupping the back of his head with her hand, she pulled him closer again.

‘Haha, I knew it! I knew something was going on between the two of you.’

Jumping back, their teeth jarred. Jenny rubbed her teeth with her finger as she turned to face Ashley. She could feel the crimson heat rise from her chest to her cheeks instantly.
